Actor Will Smith has been banned from Oscars for 10 years for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars 2022 award ceremony. Though Smith issued an apology regarding the same, it supposedly wasn’t enough to not ban him from Oscars. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ board of governors voted to ban the Best Actor winner from Oscar ceremonies and other Academy activities for the next ten years. The King Richard actor issued a statement post the ban. “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Smith wrote in his statement.
As per a report in People, on Friday, the Academy said, “The Board of Governors has decided, for a period of 10 years, from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards”.
The Pursuit to Happiness actor slapped Rock at the 94th Oscars telecast after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Jada suffers from alopecia, a medical condition where a person suffers from hair loss. Later, Smith apologized as he released a statement saying, “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable”.
