Aamir Khan has always maintained that his upcoming production venture ‘Secret Superstar’ is hid dream project. Recently he had also made a statement wherein he had said that this film is much bigger than his last released film ‘Dangal’. The film that narrated the journey of success of wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat, has marked itself in the archives of the most successful films ever made. So one wonders why Aamir considers ‘Secret Superstar’ to be a larger film.
In his recent interaction with the media, he has given the justification. When asked why does he feels so, he stated, “I am not talking about the box office. I do not get into box office predictions. For me it (‘Secret Superstar) is a much bigger film than ‘Dangal’ because I feel the film is trying to say something much bigger. Both the films are about the empowerment of the girl child. It is trying to put a spotlight on the issue of gender equality. The difference is in ‘Dangal’ the lead character is still a man and overall the film is saying something very important and positive but the fact is that it is being led by a male character. It is about Mahaveer’s dream being fulfilled. It is when he decides that ‘mera beta nahi, meri beti bhi kar sakti hai’. It is his decision and not the daughter’s. While it is in that direction and while it is a girl fulfilling his dream, but it is still driven by a male character.”
“However, in ‘Secret Superstar’ it is driven by a female. There is no male character driving it. She is a fourteen year old girl, from a small city in Baroda. There are lakhs of girls across India from small towns with a lot of dreams and aspirations, the film is about them. While ‘Dangal’ talks to the parents trying to tell them please do not differentiate between girls and boys, ‘Secret Superstar’ talks to the teenagers. The attempt is much larger. There is no male character helping her. In the trailer you might have seen Shakti Kumar mouthing that bubble line and you may think that he is the one who is helping her. But no, rather she is the one who uses Shakti Kumaar. She is a fourteen year old girl and she is a very spunky girl. She is the protagonist of the film. It is a much larger film in its concept.” he added. (Also Read: Here’s what Zaira Wasim has to say about feeling pressurised for ‘Secret Superstar’)
