‘Dobaara: See Your Evil’ movie review: Not sure about dobaara, but this one deserves a watch

In 2013, a Hollywood film titled ‘Oculus’ had hit the screens, and now in 2017, the remake of that film titled ‘Dobaara‘ is up for a release. It’s Friday morning and we get into a multiplex in suburban Mumbai to watch the film that stars Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem in the lead roles. The real life siblings have turned reel life siblings for the first time, and believe us we were quite excited for the movie. As I write this ‘Dobaara’ movie review, the only thing I am happy about is that there’s no ghost in this movie with a bad make up nor there’s someone walking backwards on four legs, how we usually see in a Bollywood horror film.

So, ‘Dobaara‘ is about siblings, Natasha Merchant (Huma) and Kabir Merchant (Saqib). Due to a possessed mirror, their father and mother died while these two were kids, and Kabir was found guilty for his father’s murder, and was sent to rehabilitation centre. Well, after 10 years he has been discharged, and now Natasha wants to destroy that mirror with the help of Kabir. Will the two be able to destroy the mirror? Well, to know that watch the film.

First let us talk about the best part of the film and that is this movie stands out when it comes to horror films or supernatural themed films made in Bollywood. There’s no spirit or ghost here with an ugly make up that makes you feel nauseous instead of scaring you. Here the spirit is damn beautiful and any man can be easily seduced by her. Surprisingly, she walks on two legs and not on not four. Isn’t that something really new for a Bollywood movie? ‘Dobaara’ gets full marks for showing us something new.

But, Prawaal Raman, the director forgets that while showing us something new, he also has to keep us hooked throughout. In the first half, while setting the plot, Raman perhaps forgot that the pace of a film like this should be a bit fast and there should be at least something that keeps us engaged. However, the film rises to a totally different level in the second half. It just gets so better that we really feel the director had saved the best for the second half. However, in the second half too this film won’t scare you. But, it will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you think what exactly the truth is. There are also some nail biting scenes in the second half. While the climax gets predictable, we are still hoping that there will be one more twist. But unfortunately that doesn’t happen and that’s the effect of the second half.

Huma Qureshi once again proves that she is a power house of talent. A fantastic act by her. Saqib Saleem grows well in the film. While in the beginning, he too is not that great, he manages to impress in the second half. Adil Hussain is amazing in his part, Lisa Haydon is strictly average. Madalina Bellirio Ion is nice. And yes there’s Rhea Chakraborty too. We wonder what she was doing in the film. Special mention to the kids who play the younger versions of Kabir and Natasha. They are fantastic.

When it comes to music, this movie offers nothing. But, the background score is quite good.

On the whole, ‘Dobaara‘ is something new we have seen in Bollywood. It surely deserves a watch.
