Extraction 2 Review:
When the Extraction 2 trailer was released, I was hoping to see some connection with the first part. However, that was not the case as it has no relevance to the first part. Extraction 2 is a fresh project but the theme of the story is the same. In Extraction, we got to see Tyler Rake extracting Ovi Mahajan (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) from the drug lords. Well, in the second part, we got to see him in another mission and that’s when it struck me, these two are different from one another.
Now, I’m retrospect, I feel Pankaj Tripathi’s character in Extraction was a total waste. I thought they will show some relevance to his character in the second part or like telling us the backstory of it. It seems the character was not needed in the story. Coming back to the movie, the makers seem to have taken action a notch higher. It starts on a slow pace as Tyler recovers from the previous incident in Dhaka. He gets back into shape and almost lives his retirement life when he receives a new mission to extract another set of people. However, this time the people are related to him and that makes him a little emotional.
We get to see a closer look at Tyler’s life but not completely. During the mission, he not only loses his close people but found some new bonds as well.
Story:
Tyler Rake is back after barely surviving his grievous wounds from his mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh. His team is ready to take on their next mission but this is not going to be easy. Tyler goes through emotional turmoil, from uniting with his loved ones to losing close ones.
Star performances:
Chris Hemsworth is the heart of Extraction 2. He plays his part quite well as he knows his character too well. First, he is a visual treat and I just couldn’t take my eyes off him (sorry for swooning over him but not so sorry). But speaking about his character, we get to know Tyler a little more closely. The writers give us a small backstory of Tyler but still raise a lot of questions about it. In terms of acting, given the fact he has done great action scenes in Marvel films, it seems like a cakewalk for him in this part. However, his brooding look and cold oceanic eyes are still intact in this movie as well and I love it.
Chris-Hemsworth
Golshifteh Farahani as Nik Khan looks hot and fierce. She is someone who doesn’t show her vulnerable side and is not very expressive. However, we got to see a different side of her character and that’s really impressive. There’s a different arc to her character in Extraction 2. Moreover, Golshifteh does a great job in playing the fierce soldier.
Highlights of Extraction 2:
Action: If you have seen the first part, then you know what the action will look like in this movie. You will witness some brutal scenes including heads getting split, broken bones protruding and riddled with bullets. Oh, don’t miss the clear headshots, several bazookas flying in and of course, lots and lots of blood oozing. Stunt coordinator-turned-director Sam Hargrave takes the carnage to another level. They are well-edited and choreographed, especially the hand combat. Not complaining but just letting you know what to expect in the store, just making you prepared.
Direction: Sam Hargrave makes Extraction 2 quite crisp and to the point even though the screenplay is not the strongest point. 90% of the film takes up action as all you will get to see is people getting pierced with bullets and blasts. However, that also needs a lot of care and execution and Sam maintains it pretty well.
Drawbacks of Extraction 2
Storyline: The screenplay of the movie looks quite dull and flimsy. Given the fact that Extraction is a high-octane action drama, it seems like Russo Brothers didn’t really pay attention to the story. Furthermore, Russo’s script moves fast but weirdly so, his villains are flat and one-dimensional. There’s no different arc to the characters.
Conclusion:
Concluding my review, Chris Hemsworth starrer Extraction 2 is an action-packed drama with a dull screenplay that doesn’t captivate you. The best part about the movie is of course Chris Hemsworth and his hotness. Later, comes the high-action sequences which look quite thrilling. Nevertheless, after watching Extraction 2, the end makes it certain that you have to now gear up for Extraction 3. I have realised that they are making a franchise with a different plot but the theme is the same.
