‘Ghanchakkar’ should start with a tag line of “I don’t know what is going on and who is taking whom for a ride”,in short that is the story all about.Starts with a couple poles apart one is subdued and absent minded-Sanju(Emraan Hashmi) the other is loud and jarring- Neetu(Vidya Balan).Emraan Khan in a pony tailed lazy lad avatar is quite amusing and complimenting him is Vidya Balan with her Punjabi tadka that adds some spice to the plot, her minute turns to mynt and her every other sentence is sprinkled with the word ‘haayn’ used to depict a myriad emotion.
Three friends-Emraan Hashmi (Sanju), Pandit (Rajesh) and Idris (Namit) plan a bank heist in a railway compartment at midnight and rob a bank wearing Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Utpal Dutt masks. The twist comes when Emraan (Sanju) who has to hide the booty suffers from amnesia, is therefore unable to identify the place where he had stashed it for safe keeeping, and what happens after he tries to recollect the place is quite hilarious. Adding to the chaos is Sanju’s wife Neetu (Vidya).
Well the storyline is sketchy with many a loophole in it, Emraan Hashmi has achieved a comfort level, where he is able to portray his character of an lazy laid back character who dons an obnoxious polko dotted night suit, gifted to him by his loud Punjabi wife with elan.
Vidya Balan has tried to play an obnoxious Punjabi wife reading Cosmopolitan but dresses up in weird conditions of jarring colours. She has somewhat been able to achieve what she had started out for.
The other two Pandit and Idris they have equal importance, but are reduced to mere side kicks. Worth mentioning is their camaraderie and banter manages to steal a few smiles from even the most reluctant.
Story line is intriguing but does manage to catch the attention of the viewer ,background score manages to set the right environment, but the soundtrack is okayish. There are a few good scenes in the movie that will remain with you long after you leave the cinema hall. On the whole it does come up to the measurement of the hype generated by the promos of the movie.
Its a one time watch movie.
