Last month Bollywood fraternity got a huge shock when Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Udta Punjab’ was leaked online. It was not even a month that another film ‘Great Grand Masti‘ faced a similar situation. Due to this sensitive issue, the makers of this adult comedy decided to prepone the release by a week. A popular franchise in Bollywood, ‘Great Grand Masti’ is the third instalment starring the successful trio of Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani aka ‘Mastikhor’ Meet, Amar and Prem respectively with a new premise and pretty interesting characters. So will the Masti Boys be able to make you go LOL or ROFL with their naughty sense of humour? The answer is YES!
The plot begins with the ready to give and receive love ‘Masti boys’ Meet, Amar and Prem marrying their respective brides as the opening credits song comes to an end. Cut to six months later, like a normal married couple they crave for love but due to some really weird personal problems in each one’s house they are far away from it. Like always, in the time of this drought for love, Prem gets a ‘Great Grand idea’ and all three head to Dudhwadi village where Amar has to sell off his ancestral palace. As they reach here forgetting the caution sign from the Sarpanch (head), they enter this haunted house just to be first welcomed and then get trapped by Ragini, (the virgin ghost) who wants them to fulfil her long lasting desire of ‘Masti’. What would this great grand Masti idea lead these boys to? Would they be able to rid themselves from Ragini’s clutches? Will Ragini let them leave easily? All answers lie in this decent comic caper ‘Great Grand Masti’.
Talking about performances, Riteish Deshmukh and Urvashi Rautela are show stealers. Riteish as Amar never fails to make you smile with his impeccable comic timing. With every scene, he proves why he is one of the best comic talents Hindi cinema has got in this new decade. Urvashi Rautela is the deadly surprise packet of this film. Her expressions and the overall act as ghost Ragini is brilliant. She perfectly balances the scary element part and those funny comic moments as well with this trio of mad boys. Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani as Meet and Prem respectively have given a good performances, but both of them have gone a bit far in some scenes which then actually seems to be forced, seen through their expressions. All the other actresses Shraddha Das, Puja Banerjee and Mishti Chakravarty – the wives – are seen in few scenes and the lengthy climax. Their screen time is less and they were certainly not provided with that amount of scenes like Urvashi. Special mention should be given to the supporting cast which comprises of outstanding actors like Sanjay Mishra, Usha Nadkarni and the icing on cake with credible cameos of Shreyas Talpade and Sudesh Lehri as the Sarpanch of the village.
Coming to the writing of this movie, Tushar Hiranandani (story), Aakash Kaushik and Madhur Sharma (screenplay and dialogues) have done a good job. Though the initial part of the movie is very dull, it picks up tremendously as Urvashi’s character enters. The second half is funny and keeps you entertained with the humour, but the climax could have been better especially with some cliché points like the ‘shield of Karwa Chauth’ thing while facing the fear of death could have been avoided.
Indra Kumar’s direction is fine. He actually brings back the original pulse of ‘Masti’ franchise with this movie which actually was lost in the second instalment ‘Grand Masti’.
The music of the film is given by multiple composers, the title track and ‘I Wanna Tera Ishq’ which features the seductress Urvashi with her killer dance moves are worth a notice, rest others just fill in the duration of the movie.
To wrap it up, ‘Great Grand Masti’ is worth a watch, if you love to watch adult comedies, this would be a good watch over this weekend. Brilliant performances of Riteish Deshmukh and Urvashi Rautela is another prime reason to catch this movie.
