Every action has its reaction. The reaction that we get for our actions might be negative or positive, and of course we don’t know the reaction before we do the action. Well, today we watched a movie titled ‘Monsoon Shootout’ which is all about action and its reaction.
‘Monsoon Shootout’ is about Adi (Vijay Varma), a sub-inspector who has joined crime branch and has been given to handle a case of a builder’s murder. His senior Khan (Neeraj Kabi) is known for encounters and he kills two suspects who were involved in the murder. But, now they are looking out for the third murderer. Well, they find the third murderer whose name is Shiva (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). However, now it’s in Adi’s hands to kill Shiva or to let him go. Or is there a third thing that he can do? The movie moves forward showing us three different sides of a story. What would have happened if Adi killed Shiva? What would happen if Adi lets go of Shiva? And what about the third path?
Well, what nowadays I like about Bollywood is that filmmakers are trying to experiment and that’s why we get to see several different kinds of movies on the big screen. But, when a filmmaker experiments, it’s his action and we are sure he won’t be knowing what reaction his movie would be getting.
First of all, hats off to Amit Kumar for coming up with a story that not many filmmakers would try to explore. But, not all good stories are converted into good films. The pace of ‘Monsoon Shootout’ is quite bumpy. For example, there’s a chase sequence going on and soon as the sequence gets over, the movie becomes too slow. A thriller should have a screenplay that keeps you on the edge-of-the-seat, but here apart from a few sequences that doesn’t happen. Amit’s narration after a certain point becomes very monotonous. The movie fails to give us some shock factors apart from some blood flowing gruesome scenes.
However, one thing that I would like to point out is that thankfully this movie doesn’t get lost in saying three different stories. It is not at all confusing and that’s where we are impressed with the editing done by Atanu Mukherjee. Even the cinematography done by Rajeen Ravi is very good.
The movie stars Vijay Varma in the lead role and he is just perfect in the movie. He is simply amazing as Adi. But, the show-stealer is Nawzuddin Siddiqui as Shiva. He plays a supporting role in the film, but nails it whenever he comes on the screen. Neeraj Kabi as Khan is superb and Tannishtha Chatterjee also impresses us. Geetanjali and Sreejita De don’t have much to do in the movie, but are good in whatever role they have.
On the whole, ‘Monsoon Shootout’ is a good concept that is unfortunately not executed that well. But, it’s surely a treat for Nawaz’s fans.
P.S. Extra half star for the makers to try out something like this.
