Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba Review

Sequels tend to lack the spark the original film had. While Haseen Dillruba – starring Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey, was a surprise package that impressed us, does Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba have the same power? After their well-executed coverup in the first film with inspiration from the murder-thriller book written by Dinesh Pandit, do Rani and Rishu get a happy ever after now or are they on the run? Who is Abhimanyu (Sunny Kaushal) and what twist does his entry bring to their love story?

Directed by Jayprad Desai and written by Kanika Dhillon, PAHD begins exactly where Haseen Dillruba ended. Does the romantic thriller – which also includes the entry of Jimmy Sheirgill as Mrityunjay Prasad – live up to the expectations of the first film? Read our Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba review to know if the Netflix film is worth a watch.

What Works

The complex writing by Kanika Dhillon is impressive, it will keep you hooked from the get-go until the final scene plays. Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey do what they do best – shine, but Sunny Kaushal too steals the limelight with his deceitful performance throughout.

What Doesn’t Work

The first half of the film seems dragged. Editors Hemal Kothari and Abhishek Shetty could have made the final product a bit crisper. More refining in direction by Jayprad Desai would surely take the film’s rating up by 0.5 for us.

Technical Analytics

Story

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba follows the effect Neel’s (Harshvardhan Rane) death and their clever escape has on the lives of Rani (Taapsee Pannu) and Rishu (Vikrant Massey). Cut from all their relatives, the couple have now moved to another city and working jobs to collect funds to escape the country. While they are just days away from seeing their dream become a reality, their past catches up with them in the form of ACP Kishore Jamwal (Aditya Srivastava) and Mrityunjay Prasad (Jimmy Sheirgill). While Kishore wants to see the culprits of the case he handled a couple of years ago punished, Mrityunjay, aka Mannu Chacha, has a personal motive attached.

In the midst of this enters Abhimanyu (Sunny Kaushal) – a compounder mesmerized and in love with Rani. Does he manage to win over Rani and get her love? Do Kishore and Mrityunjay catch the lovers and punish them for their crimes? What crimes fo they commit this time by taking inspiration from Panditji’s books? PAHD is a must-watch to know the answers to these thrilling questions. The answers are sure to blow your mind away.

Screenplay & Dialogues

Written by Kanika Dhillon, the film will have you on the edge wanting to know what’s happening next. Despite a stretched first half, the writing of the remainder of the film – especially the last 30 minutes is nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. Aside from the narrative, the one-liners of Panditji and their placement scattered all throughout the 130 minutes will keep you wanting more.

The dialogues – though not out of the world, do manage to impress and it’s the most evident when Rishu and Abhimanyu talk about their love for Rani.

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba Music

The background music provided by Anurag Saikia and the music/songs by Sachet-Parampara and Saikia add depth and character to the film. The BGM is a plus as it makes the film more intense.

Editing

A bit more refinement from Hemal Kothari and Abhishek Shetty and reducing the first half by a couple of minutes would have been a treat.

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba Star Performances

Be it Taapsee Pannu as Rani, Vikrant Massey as Rishu or Sunny Kaushal as Abhimanyu, all three lead stars of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba have impressed with their impeccable performances. Taapsee is back as Rani Saxena (nee Kashyap) and this time she’s more than ready to risk it all to save her husband. She’s seductive but sly and will lead you on to you will never know where. While it’s refreshing to see her like this, there are instances where her performance is outshined by her colleagues.

Vikrant as Rishabh Saxena – despite being one hand less, is not to be messed with. He is no longer the naive Rishu we met in Haseen Dillruba – if he wants something, he gets it. Sunny as Abhimanyu is a surprise package you could have never imagined on in the film. He is like an onion because as the movie progresses, we are introduced to new sides of the character and he pulls each off beautifully.

Jimmy Sheirgill and Aditya Srivastava are impressive as usual and leave an impact even in the limited screen time they have.

Conclusion

Sunny Kaushal’s Abhimanyu adds unexpected but intriguing twists to ‘Rani’ Taapsee Pannu and ‘Rishu’ Vikrant Massey’s love story that will leave your mind blown till the last petal falls. Do give the Netflix film a watch in the first weekend to enjoy the film to the fullest and avoid spoilers that are sure to flood the internet soon. the best experience. Hope our Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba was helpful.
