‘Poorna’ movie review: Crisp story with an inspiring message, but lacks in-depth detailing

There’s nothing really easy in life when it comes to our wishes and ambitions. You really got to work hard to make your dreams a reality, but how often do you find the motivation in your life to achieve the biggest dream? Would a movie really inspire you to run behind the most unimaginable of dreams? Well, it could. The reason I’m saying this is because we’ve just witnessed a soothing and inspirational journey of a young girl named Poorna Malavath who actually climbed the Mount Everest. Yes, the youngest girl to reach the peak of Mount Everest, the journey of this 13-year-old girl has surely left me impressed. Why? Know the reason in ‘Poorna‘ movie review.

A 13-year-old Adivasi girl, Poorna Malavath from Telangana does sweeping with her cousin sister to support her poor family. The naive girl is not happy with her life and her cousin Priya tries to help her elope from their sad destiny, but instead is forcefully married off, leaving Poorna alone. Poorna is enrolled in a school for few years, and we have Dr RS Praveen Kumar (Rahul Bose), an IPS Officer who quits his job for social reformation of the school. His meeting with Poorna changes everything for the little girl who realises her potential and embarks on a quest to climb the Mount Everest. The entire story revolves around the tough journey of a young girl who achieves the impossible.

What really worked for me was how the story based on a true concept was conveyed effectively without any sort of drama or added masala. The movie was crisp, sweet and to-the-point. There were no unwanted songs, no over-the-top scenes and performances were also controlled.

Rahul Bose gave a restrained performance which was much-needed for a story like this. Aditi Inamdar (Poorna) was a natural and S Mariya (Priya) also brought about extreme ease in her performance. It was amazing to see these two young girls churn out layered and smooth performances. The other supporting star cast comprising of actors like Dhritiman Chatterjee, Heeba Shah and Gyanendra Tripathi were also impressive in their short and sweet roles.

The tracks by Salim-Sulaiman are perfectly timed, while the narrative flows smoothly which keeps you engaged throughout. But, there are a few minor glitches like the entire story focuses less on her mountaineering journey and more on her personal life issues with her family, her schooling and so on. The makers focused more on the emotional quotient and less on the actual journey of mountaineering. Also, the dialogues were an amalgamation of Hindi and English interspersed with a little Telugu, which could have ideally been avoided. So, if you are looking for an experience in pure mountaineering, then you would be disappointed, but if you are wanting to know her life-story, then you can give this a watch.

Rahul Bose has definitely managed to portray a real life story with effective simplicity and that’s what makes this a sweet watch for us.
