Debutant director Vikramjit Singh’s ‘Roy’ hits the theaters today. Produced by Bhushan Kumar along with Krishna Kumar and Divya Khosla Kumar. ‘Roy’ happens to be a romantic thriller, a love triangle revolving around the lives of a filmmaker, a thief and their love interest. Singh has structured his narrative around Kabir and Roy. Their stories are cleverly swapped, to establish not only contradictions but also revelations.

So we have a successful filmmaker cum Casanova Kabir Grewal (Arjun Rampal). Kabir, who mints at the box office by making films on a mysterious robber Roy (Ranbir Kapoor). Roy is a heist expert, who is never caught by police. The ever gorgeous Jacqueline Fernandez interestingly has double role in the film. She depicts a role of a of a discerning filmmaker Ayesha, and the other of a pretty actress Tia.

The story starts with a show of romance between Kabir and Ayesha. The plot becomes interesting as a love triangle unfolds with several mysteries associated with Jacqueline Fernandez and Ranbir Kapoor. The climax of the film has interesting mysteries unfolding, which makes the film worthy enough to catch.

Debutant director Vikramjit Singh attempted to create something unorthodox with ‘Roy’, helping him in his venture was the superb star-cast with their powerful performances. As a director, Vikramjit Singh tried to add all the necessary ingredients in Roy. The movie has some eye-catching locations that soothes your eyes and soulful music adds a charm to the movie. Though at times a few hits and misses were witnessed, Some of the scenes and transitions appear to be unnecessarily forced.

Arjun Rampal seen after a long time has potrayed the role of a director quite aptly. The camera feeds off Arjun’s striking looks, but unfortunately Singh sometimes fails to convey the complexities and vulnerabilities of Kabir’s character convincingly. On the whole Arjun Rampal dons the role of an arrogant and successful film-maker with an attitude well.

Jacqueline Fernandez plays her dual role convincingly, but apart from the varying hairdo, there is very little gap. Maybe the director wanted to add a connection between the two to give a credibility to his story-line. The Sri Lankan beauty has truly come of age now as her performance has matured.

Ranbir Kapoor lends the right mystery to ‘Roy’. The talented Kapoor is seen on big screen after a long hiatus. Ranbir Kapoor as a charming and smart thief keeps the mystery in his character intact all through the film, though his presence in the film is comparatively short.

Anupam Kher as Kabir’s father and Shibani Dandekar have also justified their roles.

Roy’ is textured marvelously by cinematographer Himman Dhamija, though we feel that it should have been edited ruthlessly to lend that cutting edge. Roy’ holds immense promise, but misses out somewhere in between, we feel the director should have concentrated more on the heist factor rather than on romance.

Do watch it this Valentine, as ‘Roy’ is likely to dominate your heart and soul.
