Singham Again Review
Rohit Shetty’s latest cop drama not only tells the story of Diwali but celebrates it too by recreating the Ramayana with fireworks like never before. From cars flying to an intriguing story with whistle-worthy dialogues this cop universe film has it all. Singham Again begins three years after Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) transferred from Maharashtra to Kashmir and is the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) there. After the arrest of Omar Hafeez (Jackie Shroff) in the valley, the Home Minister (Ravi Kishan) tells Singham to form the Shiva Squad – a team that Singham will have complete control over and which reports directly to the minister and no one else.
The narrative fast-forwards to a couple of years later and introduces us to Danger Lanka (Arjun Kapoor) – a man hellbent on freeing Omar and avenging the deaths of the deceased in the Hafeez family. Soon later, Avni (Kareena Kapoor) – who is heading an extravagant live-action adaptation of the Ramayana by also providing footage of the actually places mentioned in the epic, is kidnapped by Danger Lanka and taken to Sri Lanka. Now, Singham, Simmba (Ranveer Singh) and Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar) as well as Satya (Tiger Shroff) and Shakti Shetty (Deepika Padukone) all head to Lanka to save ‘Sita’ Avni from the claws of ‘Ravana’ Danger Lanka and bring her safely back home.
The nearly 2.5-hour-long actioner not only entertains the audience but also imparts some knowledge about the Ramayana by beautifully weaving the epic into the narrative. Who is Danger Lanka? What’s his connection to Omar Hafeez? Why does he want to kill Singham, Sooryavanshi and Simmba? To know the answers to these questions, you will need to watch the Rohit Shetty directorial and the best place to enjoy it, is on the big screen. Read our Singham Again review to know why you are sure to enjoy the film.
What Works
Ranveer Singh’s Simmba is the highlight of this action-drama that features several top names of Bollywood. Arjun Kapoor’s fierceness as Danger Lanka is something we haven’t seen the actor deliver in a long time. Another positive of this film is the lack of unnecessary song and dance.
Technical Analysis
Direction
Rohit Shetty has done it again. The blockbuster director has once again hit the ball out of the part and delivered exactly what he promised the audience. From capturing the bindaas attitudes of Lady Singham and Simmba to the loyalty of Satya and the righteous of Singham and Sooryavanshi as well as the terror that is Danger Lanka – Shetty has hit the bull’s eye.
Story & Screenplay
Kshitij Patwardhan’s story – with a screenplay by Yunus Sajawal, Abhijeet Khuman, Kshitij, Sandeep Saket, Anusha Nandakumar and Rohit Shetty, Singham Again is a hit that to the team incorporation a little of everything and giving fans film that’s sure to get the cash registers ringing. The dialogues team – Milap Zaveri, Shantanu Srivastava, Vidhi Ghodgaonkar and Shetty, deserves a special mention for including one-liners and references to previous films that will get you to either chuckle or remember the past.
Singham Again Music
Singham Again deserves a round of applause for not making the film heavy with music and dance numbers. While we’ve seen songs like Aankh Maarey in Simmba and Tip Tip in Sooryavanshi, the latest outing has just enough songs (provided by Ravi Basrur and Thaman S) and background score (given by Basrur) to keep the narrative engaging. It is devoid of dance tracks and item songs, making the film a pleasant watch with no distractions.
Singham Again Performances
Talking about performances, all the actors have done justice to their parts, especially Arjun Kapoor as Danger Lanka and Ranveer Singh as Simmba. Given that the film is not even 2.5 hours long, we miss seeing more of ‘Lady Singham’ Deepika Padukone and ‘Satya Bali’ Tiger Shroff.
Ajay Devgn as the righteous Singham is ferocious and portrays the emotions expected from a ‘ghayal sher’ (wounded lion) wanting revenge on those who harmed his family perfectly. Ranveer Singh provides much-needed laughter and lightness as Simmba but is equally deadly when he’s behind the wheel of a car or with an AK47 in his hands. Akshay Kumar – even with his limited screentime, manages to kill as many goons as the number of name he forgets in all the cop universe films he’s featured in to date.
Kareena Kapoor delivers as Avni, however, we wish we saw more of Daya and Shwweta Tiwari.
Conclusion
Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again is a dhamakedaar Diwali release that’s filled with action, drama, dialogues and chuckle-worthy one-liners courtesy ‘Simmba’ Ranveer Singh and ‘Sooryavanshi’ Akshay Kumar. PS: Stay till the end their a cameo you don’t want to miss. PSS: Did you know Simmba was part of the 2011 Singham? Watch Singham Again to know about his cameo there.
