Vijay Varma starrer Kaalkoot REVIEW

Kaalkoot starring Vijay Varma is about a police officer looking for answers after he was appointed for an acid attack case. As I was watching this series, I was wondering why acids are still being sold in general stores. Why there’s no ban on these acids? Then I did a little research, stating that Supreme Court has indeed imposed a ban on the selling of acids in 2013. However, people are still buying it and I wonder if there will be an end to this ever. Nevertheless, coming back to my Kaalkoot review, Vijay Varma starrer is intense and hard-hitting. Kaalkoot shows crimes against women, toxic masculinity and male chauvinism.

Story:

The web series is about a young officer named Ravi who is an innocent police officer and just wants to work with utmost dedication. Whenever he sees that police are lacking in doing their job or just not working dedicatedly, he feels like resigning. However, his senior Jagish denies his resignation and makes him work on an acid attack case. During the course, he understands the true meaning of being a police officer. Being constantly pressurised by her mother for marriage and being bullied by seniors, Ravi is headstrong to solve the case.

What’s good about Kaalkoot:

Vijay Varma’s character: Given that the story is about crimes against women and toxic masculinity, Sumit showed a man who is just the opposite. From being considerate to respecting women and their feelings, Sumit created a character like Ravi Shankar Tripathi. Yes, there might be some flaws in this character but he is good at heart. And that’s what connects me the most with Ravi. In a patriarchal world, here’s Ravi who is still struggling to understand this concept.

Screenplay: Sumit Saxena picked a strong plot for the web series and he has ensured to write it with sensitivity. There was a scene where people are laughing when the constable said that he couldn’t take the victim’s statement as her mouth got stuck due to an acid attack. A lot of people, as well as police officers, do not understand the seriousness of the crime. While watching you will surely think what insensitive people are as they are mocking the victim. But this could be the case in reality and hence, I liked how he kept it raw and real.

What didn’t workout about Kaalkoot:

Predictable story: I have always noticed that it is always the person who is the least expected one in any thriller shows. Well, that’s what has happened with Kaalkoot as well. The story gets quite predictable by the time you reach the 5th episode.

Star performances:

Vijay Varma is often seen playing the cunning or the bad guy in movies and web series; however, his character in Kaalkoot was quite refreshing. He proves that he can also play good characters as well on screen. Vijay shows the perfect blend of innocent and angry young man. He delivers a convincing role as sub inspector. I loved him throughout the series and enjoyed his character.

Shweta Tripathi plays the acid attack victim in the series and she is seen in the limited time. However, she is the main attraction as the story revolves around her. Shweta delivers a promising performance with her limited screen time.

Gopal Dutt plays the inspector in the series and he also makes an impact with his performance. It was a little difficult for me to see him in this serious avatar as I have usually seen him in comical roles. He has really proved his mettle as an actor.

Seema Biswas is a delight to watch as the cute mom. She plays the role of Ravi’s mother. Though her screen time was less, she managed to impress me with her performance.

Yashpal Sharma plays a constable who is like Ravi’s left-handed man. First, it was such a delight to watch him again onscreen after a hiatus. He does a fair job playing his character.

Conclusion:

Concluding my review of Kaalkoot, Vijay Varma delivers a solid performance while Sumit Saxena offers a riveting story. It starts at a slow pace but picks up in the 4th episode, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Even though it gets predictable, Sumit keeps the intensity intact and hence, it makes you want to watch next. It is worth watching but it is one time watch.
