Bombay High Court questions Maharashtra Govt about Sanjay Dutt’s early release from prison

On Monday, the Bombay High Court questioned the Government of Maharashtra regarding the early release of actor Sanjay Dutt from prison. The actor was convicted in the 1993 serial blasts case and was accused of hiding arms and ammunition in his house. He was sentenced to five years imprisonment. In May 2013, the actor had surrendered after Supreme Court had upheld his conviction. Then, after serving his jail term, the actor was released eight months early in February 2016, due to his good conduct in Yerawada prison of Pune. A PIL was filed by Pune resident Pradeep Bhalekar questioning the paroles and furloughs the actor was granted during his sentence. The PIL was heard by a division bench of justices RM Sawant and Sadhana Jadhav. So, the court ordered the state government to make an affidavit which stated the procedures that were followed in providing Dutt with some leniency. Justice Sawant questioned, “Was the DIG, Prisons, consulted or did the jail superintendent directly send his recommendation to the governor? Also, how did the authorities assess that Dutt’s conduct was good? When did they get the time to make such assessment when he was out on parole half the time?”

The court will further address the matter after a week.
