Actress Mallika Sherawat, who has always been extremely vocal about her support for women-related causes, has recently shot for a documentary on women’s issues in Mumbai. Titled ‘Free A Girl’, the film is being made by the volunteers of the ‘Free A Girl Movement’ – a Dutch project that highlights violence against Indian women.
When asked about what made her shoot the documentary, she says, “India is on the brink of a rise and I want everyone to rise together. India cannot realize its full potential till its women are safe. We have to take a stand on this issue. Not talking about it or not taking a stand is as much a problem. Every minute that we don’t take action, there is a woman suffering and these women do not have the luxury of waiting for an eventual change.
As for her experience of shooting for it, Mallika adds, “It was inspiring to work with a group of committed women, who are determined to make their voices heard.”
The actress who is known for her philanthropic activities over the years shares a strong point of view on women’s rights and has also been involved with the UN and an NGO ‘Urja’. At the 65th United Nations DPI/NGO Conference in 2014, Mallika had spoken about the problems women face in India.
