Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Bajirao Mastani‘ has hit a hurdle once again. Earlier the Filmmaker was accused of distorting history by the descendants of Bajirao and Mastani. Now political parties such as Shiv Sena and BJP have also raised their voice against the historical romance, they are seeking a temporary ban on the film. The politicians are of a view that the movie should be released after the historians have reviewed it.
BJP MLA from Pune Medha Kulkarni in a letter written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Songs released from this film have clearly distorted the history of Bajirao Peshwa of Pune. This is a crime against Maharashtra’s history. This film must undergo the scrutiny of historians before its release and the State government should take the initiative.”
Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik too raised objections over lyrics and scenes in the film. He added that the objectionable portions of the movie that distorts history should be removed. In a letter to the chief minister, he also requested that the film be screened to all members of the State Legislature before its release.
Sarnaik added, “Bajirao Peshwa is an important part of the State’s history. His movie appears commercial with no consideration for Marathi culture and the legacy of Peshwa.” He said the movie would be screened not only in Maharashtra but also across the globe. “Hence, it must depict Marathi culture and Maratha legacy in the correct form. Objections have been raised on Kashi and Mastani dancing together in the song ‘Pinga’. Many believe that these two historical characters never even met each other. Also, Bajirao Peshwa while dancing in a song, ‘Malhari’, is shown using words ‘Wat lagali’. Being a representative of Marathi Manoos, these scenes hurt my sentiments.”
‘Bajirao Mastani’ starring Deepika Padukone Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra is set to release on December 18.
