Akshay Kumar recalls the days when he was only offered action-hero roles

Akshay Kumar is one of those actors in Bollywood who has done all genres of movies and has been consistent in his performances. He started his career as an action hero and there was a time he was typecast and was offered only action dramas as filmmakers thought that he wouldn’t suit the persona of a romantic hero or be able to justify other genres.

Over the years, Akshay kept on reinventing himself and evolved as one of the finest actors in Bollywood. During a recent media interaction when Akshay was asked how difficult it was to reinvent himself as an actor to survive in the industry, he said it’s not difficult but rather fun to change the image for different roles.

The actor said, “It is great and fun to do different characters all the time. You can say I have been scarred when I started my career. I was only doing action films and nobody was offering me any other role because I would only do action and if there was some kind of a romantic, comedy or tragedy drama, nobody would give me. I was only stuck with action. And one fine day I got ‘Hera Pheri’ and everything changed.”

Recalling his old days, the ‘Rustom’ actor shared, “I remember those days when I stand in the lift and when the lift used to come down I used to look in the mirror and mujhe gheen aati thi kyunki abhi main shoot pe jayunga aur phir director bolega aaj yeh stunts karo, do kick maro and all.  Maine socha ki bas yahi kabil main reh gaya tha. (I used to feel bad thinking that now I will go for shoot and then the director would ask me to do stunts and kicks. I used to think that my capability is only restricted to this). And then ‘Hera Pheri’ gave me the opportunity to change.”

“It has been since last twelve years now that I have got the chance to keep on changing images and I enjoy myself. So it is not a tough thing,” added Akshay.

It is true that action gives Akshay high but apart from action films, he has proved his mettle in movies like ‘Namastey London’, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, ‘Singh Is Kinng’, ‘Airlift’, ‘Rustom’, and ‘Pad Man’ among others.

Currently, he is gearing up for his upcoming release ‘Kesari’ where he is playing Havildar Ishar Singh, who led the 21 Sikhs and fought against an army of 10,000 Afghan soldiers in the Battle of Saragarhi in 1897. The movie is releasing on March 21.
