Reliving the fairy tale love story of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh that we wish would never have ended

Amrita Singh is a vivacious, bold and an outspoken actress – a typical Punjabi girl. And Saif Ali Khan, the only lad of the Pataudi family, was new in town and was trying his hands at acting. Amrita was a successful actress at that time and Saif was a struggler. Both were poles apart but as someone has rightly said, “opposites attract.” Despite a 12 year age difference, Amrita and Saif fell for each other and plunged into one entity. While going through an old chat show of Simi Gerewal, my heart melted seeing the couple so much in love with each other. It was a treat to see Saif holding Amrita’s hand to comfort her during the show.

Their first meeting

Saif was about to get launched by Rahul Rawail and the latter invited Amrita to do a photo shoot with the star cast of the film. Saif said, “I was sitting and saw her (Amrita) rushing in and it was not like love at first sight. I was polite and nice to her and she didn’t appreciate it very much.”

Adding to this, Amrita said, “He put his arm around me during the photo session and I was looking at him thinking it takes guts to do this to Amrita Singh.” Something sparked between them and one day, Saif called her for dinner to which Amrita refused. He again asked her for lunch and she again turned down his proposal. Later on, she called him for dinner at her place.

The dinner date

Saif was in Amrita’s house for dinner and she clearly told him not to be in the impression that something might happen between them. Some chords struck between them and by the end of the dinner, they kissed each other and later proposed to each other. The night was not an ordinary night for both of them. It was the start of a new love story. Saif never moved out of his ladylove’s house for two days. After getting a number of calls from directors and producers, he decided to go for shooting. But Amrita was so much in love with him that she didn’t want him to leave the house. So, she asked Saif to take her car so that he would come back to return it to her. “I wanted to see him again. I wanted to get him back to my house,” she said.

They were head over heels in love with each other and Saif used to sleep in another room and never had a physical relationship for three months.

Their decision to be one

Amrita already climbed the ladder of success and wanted to get married. Saif was a newbie. Also, she was much older to Saif. Both wanted to be with each other, no matter what the consequences. Amrita said, “I never imagined to get married to a man younger to me. Saif was perhaps the only man in my life who has patience with me and that means a lot to me. I felt so comfortable with him. We decided to get married two days before we got married.”

When both were asked as to what made them get married, Saif said, “I strongly felt you don’t meet people very often who on every chemical level, do something right for you. I thought I won’t get it again so I thought to hang on.”

Saif and Amrita got hitched in 1991 and due to some differences and Saif’s link-ups with other women, their marriage started losing its charm and both separated in 2004. The couple, who were once upon a time so passionately in love, parted ways. As we go through the old interviews and pictures of the duo, we wonder how someone falls out of love in spite of being so much in love!
