The mystery behind their white clothes
Abbas-Mustan always wear white clothes, and of course in that interview, they were questioned about it. The director duo had stated that as their school uniform had white shirt, they never felt that they should change the colour. At the premiere of ‘Baazigar’, they had tried to wear suit but were uncomfortable. In some other interview, they had stated, “We don't have to worry about what to wear every day. We can't think of anything but white. So it's set now.”
They are inseparable
Well, not many people know this that Abbas-Mustan are inseparable. They share a common phone and are always together till they sleep. Even once they get up, the first thing they do is to see each other. They had revealed that producers like Ramesh Taurani with whom they have worked since many years cannot distinguish their voices till date.
Turning point with ‘Baazigar’, and Shah Rukh Khan’s visit to their place
The director duo revealed that when Shah Rukh Khan won Filmfare award for ‘Baazigar’, he came to meet them at their place at 4 am. He didn’t go to his place, but came to their house in a chawl to take their blessings. It was Ramzan going on, and when SRK went to the gallery of their house there were 2000 people waving at him. After that people started recognizing them as well, and in the morning when they used to have their tea in balcony, people sitting in double decker bus used to wave to them.

Later in the 90s Abbas-Mustan shifted from their house in chawl to a large apartment in Lokhandwala where they all stay together.
Their journey to become directors
Abbas-Mustan’s maternal uncle was a film editor, so since their childhood they would go to the shop and the editing studio on their holidays. The two were filmy buffs since their childhood. In the interview, they have revealed that they used to bunk school picnics and go to watch back-to-back movies from morning to evening. They then started learning editing and assisted Gujarati, Punjabi and Rajasthani directors separately. The director duo made a revelation that they used to ghost-direct films which went on to become silver jubilees. Then a Gujarati producer, Govindbhai Patel, gave them their first break as a director-duo for a Gujarati film. Patel felt that as a duo they would be fantastic, and he named them as Abbas-Mustan.
When they could only afford one meal a day
Abbas-Mustan had revealed that their uncle had cheated their father because of which they had faced a lot of financial issues. Abbas had to leave his studies, while Mustan studied till college, and was also working along with it. They could only afford one meal a day, and their parents would not eat themselvesand feed them instead. Sometimes Abbas would not eat food and give it to Mustan.
We all loved the films ‘Khiladi’, ‘Baazigar’, ‘Daraar’, ‘Soldier’, ‘Ajnabee’, ‘Aitraaz’ and ‘Race’. These films are helmed by the director duo Abbas-Mustan. They have directed many stylish films, but are extremely simple in real life. Abbas-Mustan are one of the most successful directors in Bollywood. But, their journey was indeed humble. Few years ago, they had given an interview to a leading daily, wherein they spoke about their journey from a chawl to an apartment in Lokhandwala. They also revealed how people started knowing them, and why they always wear white.
