Amitabh Bachchan is one of the biggest megastars to have ever come out of the Indian film industry. It truly makes one thank his parents to have brought him in this world. However, as filmy Bachchan is, seems his parents’ love story is much more filmy. It has romance, action, rebellion and a lot more.
Amitabh Bachchan on his father facing opposition for intercaste marriage
Amitabh Bachchan is the son of renowned Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan. The couple got married in 1941 but the way into their marriage wasn’t easy. During a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), Bachchan revealed that his father faced a lot of opposition for his marriage.
The reason was that it was an intercaste marriage. Teji Bachchan was Teji Suri before she wed Harivansh ji. Even today there are people who frown upon intercaste or interfaith marriage, so during that time, the situation was worse. Big B revealed, “My babuji had done an intercaste marriage. My maataji Teji was from a Sikh family and when we lived in Allahabad, over there getting married in a different caste was called a sin during that time. So during that time, people fought against my father when he took my mother to Allahabad.”
Sarojini Naidu’s contribution to Amitabh Bachchan’s father’s life
The revelation came after a question on political activist and renowned poet Sarojini Naidu. A little hesitantly, Bachchan shared that Sarojini ji was in fact a big fan of his father. He also revealed that she was the one who supported him after marriage when everyone else was against him. He said, “So Sarojini Naidu was the first person who consoled him. She introduced him to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who used to live in Anand Bhavan in Allahabad. I still remember the way she had introduced my father. She said, ‘meet the poet and the poetry’.”
The love story of Harivansh ji and Teji ji is truly a filmy one and it justifies that Big B is such a big film star today. The couple had a long and happy married life of over 60 years. Harivansh ji passed away in 2003 while Teji ji died in 2007.
