The real reason behind Aamir Khan’s ouster from ‘Darr’
When the actor was asked about having any regrets of walking out of 'Darr', Aamir had said, "One, I did not walk out of 'Darr'. I was removed from the film. Two, I was removed from the film because I asked for a joint narration with Sunny Deol. Initially, the director agreed, but later I don't know why he changed his mind. When I persisted, he phoned to say 'Aamir, let's work some other time.' So I said, 'Fine'."
Aamir Khan’s confidence in ‘Darr’
Today, we all are well aware of Aamir Khan's track record of delivering blockbuster films. Undoubtedly, his instinct and confidence about a film was the same in the 90s. After 'Darr' was released in theatres, it was a super success at the box office. But, Aamir knew that this film would have done wonders. Talking about it in that interview, he had said, "That the film was going to become a big hit is something I had expected. In fact, that's the reason I signed it."
Why Aamir Khan felt relieved when he was out of ‘Darr’?
Aamir had missed out on the role and about the same he spoke, "I said that success and failure are not in my control. But using my judgement for choosing a success or a failure most certainly is. And I was using this judgement when I accepted 'Darr'. When I said yes to 'Darr', I was absolutely sure of two things - one that the film was going to click and two, that I was going to enjoy doing the role. My doubts about my enjoying it, surfaced when the director refused to give a joint narration. In a way I was relieved when I was finally out of the film, because this was better than suffering all through its shooting. If I felt sad, it was about my missing out on a very good role."
Aamir Khan’s vow to not work with Yash Chopra
Aamir Khan had worked earlier with filmmaker Yash Chopra in 'Parampara' (1992), 'Darr' was to be their second collaboration. But, after this incident, the actor vowed never to work with the filmmaker. Aamir had said, "No. I'll never work with him. Not after this incident. Our styles of working are different." Though, leaving the past behind, Aamir had yet again teamed up with Yash Chopra (as a producer) when he acted in films 'Fanaa' and 'Dhoom 3', which were made under the latter's banner Yash Raj Films.
Sunny Deol too decided to not work with Yash Chopra
Reportedly, actor Sunny Deol was given a choice by Yash Chopra to select from both roles, the one best suited to him. Perhaps, going by his hero image, Sunny gave his nod to Sunil Mehra's character. However, after the film's release, it was Shah Rukh Khan's character which took away the limelight. Reports suggest that this didn't go down well with Sunny and in one of his interviews, he also said, "I'll never work with Yash Chopra again. He isn't a man of his words. I don't have good memories about him, he betrayed my faith in him." To date, Sunny Deol has never worked again in any of the films produced under Yash Chopra's banner.
Late filmmaker Yash Chopra’s psychological thriller ‘Darr’ (1993) is considered to be one of the major turning points in superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s career. But this character of an obsessed lover was originally offered to veteran actor Rishi Kapoor (as mentioned in his autobiography). After he refused the role, Aamir Khan stepped in to play this iconic role. Though later he also opted out of ‘Darr’. Reports suggest that Aamir had some creative differences with director Yash Chopra. However, not many of the superstar’s fans would know that Aamir was not the one to opt out of ‘Darr’. He was actually removed by the makers. During one of his earlier interviews, Aamir had spoken about this controversy, which brought out some shocking revelations. But why did both Aamir and Sunny Deol decide to not work with Yash Chopra again?
