Hum Aapke Hain Koun starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit is an iconic movie which is cherished by the audience even today. Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit starrer Hum Aapke Hain Koun was released in 1994. And, the movie emerged as a blockbuster hit. However, not many know that it was Aditya Chopra who saved the movie from being a ‘disaster’.
When Aditya Chopra saved Salman Khan starrer
Initially, at the premiere of Hum Aapke Hain Koun, the movie didn’t receive an amazing or a much pleasing response. The reaction from the movie screening left director Sooraj Barjatya disheartened as well. Although, it was filmmaker Aditya Chopra who felt otherwise. He loved the movie and felt it required only a few changes to be a hit.
Speaking in Netflix’s recently released docu-series titled The Romantics, Sooraj Barjatya recalled the time when the Salman Khan starrer did not receive a good response at the premiere. He said, “We had a show (for the industry) at Liberty. That show was a disaster.”
Barjatya revealed that Aditya Chopra called him after the movie to tell him how much he enjoyed it. Aditya Chopra called the Hum Aapke Hain Koun director and told him, “Sooraj, it’s a damn good film. Don’t worry.”
Sooraj Barjatya further mentioned the audience’s reaction to Chopra, who then suggested a few cuts. Aditya recommended that a few songs should be cut from the film and it would “fly“. He said, “Cut two and a half songs from the film and it will fly!”
The filmmaker considered the suggestion made by Aditya Chopra and cut the songs- Chocolate Lime Juice and Mujhse Juda Ho kar from the film. For the unversed, the film has a total of 16 songs in it, spread across the 3 hours 26 minutes run time of the movie.
Sooraj Barjatya recalls reaction at Hum Aapke Hain Koun premiere
Barjatya had mentioned how he thought that he made the ‘greatest film’ but the reaction of the people at the movie premiere shocked him. Speaking with Indian Express, the filmmaker had said, “I learnt it very early with Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! because I thought I had made the greatest film, but when we had the premiere people were not liking it! I clearly remember the audience walking out with every song! I thought I had made a good but then I started wondering, ‘Ye kya hogaya’ (what has happened).”
Talking about the movie, it was written and directed by Barjatya. It featured Mohnish Behl too, apart from Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit.
