Flashback Friday: When Shah Rukh Khan made a guest appearance in Wagle Ki Duniya

As the Badshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan completes 29 years in the film industry, let’s take a look at his cameo appearance in the popular show Wagle Ki Duniya. SRK did a guest appearance in an episode on Wagle Ki Duniya (1989). The actor had appeared in a couple of TV shows like Fauji and Dil Dariya before featuring in an episode of Wagle Ki Duniya. Shah Rukh played a reckless driver who hits Mr Wagle (Anjan Srivastav) and is later taken to the police station. In a clip from the show, we can see young dashing Shah Rukh Khan busy in an argumentative conversation with Mr. Wagle.

Shah Rukh played a rich brat on the show. After hitting Wagle, he gets out of the car in style with a cigarette in hand and apologises to him. He might have had a guest appearance on the show but looked charming in the cameo. After Wagle Ki Duniya, SRK appeared on shows like Circus, Doosra Keval and a mini-series Idiot. Wagle Ki Duniya starred Anjan Srivastava and Bharti Achrekar in lead roles. The sitcom mirrored the lifestyle of middle-class India, which made it even more relatable. The viewers empathised with the protagonist whose problems were similar to theirs. Despite having no big stars or grand sets, the show earned a cult status and a great fan following with its subtle humour.

Produced by Durga Khote Productions, Wagle Ki Duniya was directed by Kundan Shah and its characters were created by RK Laxman and showed the day-to-day life of middle-class families. In the episode named Police Station, Wagle gets hit by Shah Rukh’s car. He comes out and apologises. Wagle is ready to forget things but the bystanders create a huge issue and ask Wagle to take him to the police. At the police station, all the witnesses leave making an excuse of work while SRK and Wagle are stuck. The actor is also seen being schooled by Mr Wagle for smoking in the police station and his reckless driving. The two are then asked to appear at the police station the next day. It is then that they find out that if Wagle files a case, it might get extended for months. As a result, Wagle decides not to file a case. The episode portrayed how filing a legal case is a lengthy process in the country.

Wagle Ki Duniya – Nayi Peedhi Purane Kissey (literally: ‘Wagle’s World – New Generation New Stories’) launched again on 8 February 2021 on Sony SAB. It stars Sumeet Raghavan as a manager in a courier company, Rajesh Wagle; Pariva Pranati as his wife, Vandana Wagle; Anjan Srivastav as Rajesh’s father, Srinivas Wagle; and Bharati Achrekar as Rajesh’s mother, Radhika Wagle.
