They assumed a little known heroine would turn the viewers off. Lot of people that tine had mistaken her to be Madhuri Dixit or Kajol i.e. the heroines Shah Rukh had already romanced on screen.

Aditya Chopra had written a role opposite Amitabh Bachchan too. Sridevy was approached for that, but she turned down.

Kajol and Karishma were oferred respectively the characters of Sanjana & Ishika. But they both rejected playing them.
