He said, “I believe that to combat violence against women, men will have to change. Hitting women is not a sign of masculinity. Instead, it shows cowardice. If we truly want to be real men we will have to first learn to be sensitive.”
Amitabh Bachchan
Amitabh Bachchan, the veteran actor of the Bollywood, is an active supporter of women empowerment. Recently, he was chosen as he UN Ambassador for the girl child and looks forward to “free the country of the malaise of discrimination against women”. He also supports “Bell Bajao” campaign that addresses the issue of domestic violence.
Boman Irani
Boman Irani, the quintessential actor, is the ambassador of the “Bell Bajao” campaign which addresses the issue of domestic violence. In an interview, he had said “Domestic violence is across all social and economical classes of the society. It’s like cancer which our families are infected with. We need to amass courage and confront it as it is a threat to our social identity…Men have an active role to play in order to change attitudes… I am certain to see an India free from domestic violence”.
Farhan Akhtar
Farhan Akhtar launched a campaign ‘MARD – Men Against Rape and Discrimination’, he additionally went to New York as a part of the panel discussion for violence against women. He was cited saying, “Gender violence and gender inequality is not just a women’s issue. It’s also a man’s issue. It’s not just because we have mothers, wives, sisters and daughters. We’re here because it’s a human rights issue and we are all human beings. I want to call on all men and boys to be a catalyst for a change, and through our actions, create a value system to end gender disparity”, at the gender equality talk.
John Abraham
John Abraham, the attractive actor, showed his support to the acid attack victims, by joining hands with Fever Voice of Change. At the campaign, he was quoted saying “It’s very important to respect a woman, but we men tend to forget that. So, it is very important that parents should teach their sons to be courteous towards them. The way a father treats his wife, his son also follows the same”.
Shah Rukh Khan
Shah Rukh Khan, the Badshah of the Bollywood, was often called ‘effeminate’ in his youth. Talking about that label, he said, “I found it very strange. For me, when I signed the campaign there was no analysis attached in terms of sexuality. I think it’s an over-simplification of things, because I usually don’t do anything overtly macho, so people think I am effeminate, which is OK by me.” When ridiculed for endorsing a soap brand, he further talked along the lines of gender stereotypes and disparity, “the people who talk about me don’t know me well enough. I am very happy being what I am. I don’t need to make a gesture from charity to masculinity, from goodness to meanness to prove a point to anybody. I don’t agree soaps are the domain of women alone, and in my house, I don’t have a special soap”.
Most of us know that feminism is about the equality of the sexes and it is certainly better when both the genders recognize the thought. Be that as it may, the term is confounded for misandry (hating men) and the actual idea goes for a toss. Nonetheless, there are few Bollywood actors out there who know and support feminism strongly.
