Suriya starrer Jai Bhim has landed in trouble. The Tamil Nadu court has asked Chennai Police to file a case against Suriya, his wife Jyotika and the director, TJ Gnanavel. The order has been given for allegedly portraying the Vanniyar community in poor light in the film. As per a report in The Hindu, the court issued an order following a complaint/petition from K.Santhosh Naicker, an advocate and founder of Ruthra Vanniyar Sena in Velachery.
For the unversed, post the release of Jai Bhim, the complaint was filed by a Vanniyar group called Rudra Vanniyar Sena. They claimed that in a scene the makers have shown a calendar with the ‘Agni Gundam’ (raging fire) symbol. It apparently represents the community and the political organisations associated with the community. Vanniyar Sangam issued a legal notice to Suriya, Jai Bhim director TJ Gnanavel and Amazon India seeking an apology. They asked to remove the objectionable scenes and they were even removed. The community even demanded to ban the film and Rs. 5 crore compensation was demanded within seven days.Gnanavel even also apologized on the same.
Now, after months of release of Jai Bhim, the court heard the arguments of the petitioner and issued orders to investigate the case further.
The movie released on November 2 on Amazon Prime Video and was raved by critics and audiences. It was even sent for Oscars but didn’t make to the final list. The courtroom drama also won two awards at the 2022 Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival.
