Suriya starrer Jai Bhim released on Amazon Prime Video on November 2. Post it release, it sparked a huge controversy over a slapping scene. There is a scene in Jai Bhim in which Prakash Raj is shown slapping a Hindi-speaking pawnbroker to speak in Tamil. This has irked a section of the audience as it didn’t go well with them. The actor has now reacted to the controversy. In an interview, Prakash said how people who are against the scene have ignored the injustice against tribal people shown in the movie.
In an interview with News 9 said that people only noticed the slap scene and did not see the agony of the tribal people. He added, “it exposes their agenda.” “There are over a thousand cases of tribal women who have not received any formal education being sent notices in English. There is a need to see the larger perspective,” he said.
Prakash Raj called the criticism “unfair” as he has also been a part of Hindi cinema. He added, “I came to Hindi very late but I have also given back to that industry. It’s okay for us to have differences, we have to learn to live with them. Focus here is on injustice. Let us be fair”.
Meanwhile, the makers of Jai Bhim have digitally changed a shot of a calendar with a communal symbol after it became a topic of controversy on social media. Some people took offense to this scene. So, the makers have replaced the symbol with a picture of Goddess Lakshmi. The makers conveyed this via a statement.
Jai Bhim is produced by Suriya and Jyotika under the banner of 2D Entertainment. It is directed by TJ Gnanavel. Jai Bhim is a courtroom drama about the fight for the oppressed and against caste-based discrimination. The film features Suriya who played lawyer Chandru.
