Bollywood’s nightingale and veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar expressed grief over the demise of legendary singer and ghazal maestro Mubarak Begum Shaikh. Lata and Mubarak Begum had sung a duet in the 1955 film ‘Baradari’. The song “Dil humse wah lagaaye jo hans ke teer khaye” went on to be a much loved song of the times.
Lata tweeted her grief and said, “Bahut dukh ki baat hai ki hamare samay ki gaayika Mubarak Begum ji hamare bich nahi rahi.”

Mubarak Begum had not been keeping well since long now and had been hospitalised a number of times. She passed away at the age of 80 at her Jogeshwari residence, and is survived by her son Hussain, daughter-in-law Zarina and granddaughter Sana with whom she had been living. The late singer had fallen to financial problems due to her medical treatment and expenses. She was helped by Lata Mangeshkar, Salman Khan and many others to tide over her difficult times.
Her cremation took place at the Oshiwara Muslim Kabrastan on Tuesday.
