nayanthara, dhanush,

Before the release of the documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, a legal battle began between Dhanush and Nayanthara regarding copyright claims. On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, the Madras High Court dismissed Netflix India’s request to reject Dhanush’s copyright claims related to the documentary of Nayanthara.

Clear win for Dhanush after plea against Nayanthara rejected

Live Law reported that the trial commenced last week at the High Court. The court’s decision confirmed that Netflix India could not dismiss Dhanush’s claims regarding the unauthorized use of footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the documentary. It is because there was no No Objection Certificate (NOC) provided by Dhanush.

The publication stated, “#MadrasHC DISMISSES Netflix India’s Application To Reject copyright suit filed by #Dhanush against #NetflixIndia, #Nayanthara, #VigneshSivan and their production company for unauthorisedly using footage from #NaanumRowdyDaan in the Netflix documentary.”

Upcoming hearings

The presiding judge also informed Netflix’s Indian entity, Los Gatos. A hearing for the interim injunction filed by Dhanush’s company, Wunderbar, would take place on February 5. Netflix contended that the images of Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan from the film were posted in 2020. It was without any subsequent action taken at that time. They argued that Dhanush’s suit was filed only a week after the documentary’s release, indicating a lack of urgency.

Dhanush’s position

In response, Dhanush’s counsel mentioned that an email was sent protesting the use of the footage. It was when the documentary trailer was released, but no action was taken. They emphasized that even elements like costumes and hairstyles rightfully belonged to the production house.

About the case

In November of the previous year, Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films Private Limited initiated legal action. It mentioned Nayanthara, Vignesh, and their company Rowdy Pictures Private Limited. The suit alleges that they improperly used specific visuals from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the Netflix documentary. Furthermore, Dhanush’s company has filed a motion requesting the High Court’s permission to sue Los Gatos Production Services India LLP. It is the entity through which Netflix manages its content investments in India.
