What makes Vishal Bhardwaj’s seventh National Film Award ‘truly special’?

Bollywood’s multi-faceted talent Vishal Bhardwaj was ecstatic on Monday upon bagging the Best Screenplay Writer (adapted) award for ‘Talvar’. While he has won six National Awards in the past, he says what makes this one “truly special” is that it’s his first for the screenplay.

“I am thrilled and honoured to receive my seventh National Award. What makes this one truly special is that it is my first for the screenplay. After ‘Makdee’, this is only the second screenplay I have written on my own,” Bhardwaj said in a statement.

“I was particularly anxious about the screenplay of ‘Talvar’ as it constantly jumps timelines and intricately weaves together multiple perspectives. It was a challenge to write and I am deeply humbled by this prestigious recognition,” he added.

‘Talvar’, directed by Meghna Gulzar, was a retelling of three investigation theories behind the Aarushi Talwar-Hemraj murder case.

Upon his victory, Bhardwaj once again took the opportunity to “highlight the deplorable condition of our justice system”.

“Innocent citizens across India are being denied justice in cases that stay pending for years to decades. I hope we can all stand as one in saying this is unacceptable,” he said.

Earlier, Bhardwaj had won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay for ‘Haider’ (which he had co-written with Basharat Peer). The film had also won him the Best Music Direction honour. He had also been lauded for his compositions for ‘Ishqiya’ and ‘Godmother’.

These apart, he had won the National Awards for Best Children’s Film (‘The Blue Umbrella’) and a Special Jury Award for ‘Omkara’.
