Legendary filmmaker and poet, Buddhadeb Dasgupta left for the heavenly adobe on June 10. The National award-winning filmmaker died due to age-related complications. He was 77. Dasgupta breathed his last in Kolkatta. Reportedly, the filmmaker was suffering from kidney disease and undergoing regular dialysis. He had bagged the coveted National Film Award for Best Feature Film five times in his career. His contribution to Bengali cinema is unparalleled.

Five of Dasgupta’s films have won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film  Bagh Bahadur (1989) namely Charachar (1993), Lal Darja (1997), Mondo Meyer Upakhyan (2002) and Kaalpurush (2008), while Dooratwa (1978) and Tahader Katha (1993) have won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. As a director, he has won National Film Award for Best Direction twice, for Uttara (2000) and Swapner Din (2005).

Tahader Katha starred Mithun Chakraborty and that film won him the National Film Awards for Best Actor.

Mourning the eminent filmmaker’s death, Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee tweeted, “Saddened at the passing away of eminent filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta. Through his works, he infused lyricism into the language of cinema. His death comes as a great loss for the film fraternity. Condolences to his family, colleagues and admirers (sic).”
