Days after resigning as the president of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), senior actor Mohanlal made his first public appearance earlier today. The actor – who attended the inaugural ceremony of the Kerala Cricket League in Thiruvananthapuram, greeted the audience with folded hands and broke his silence regarding the Kerala government’s decision to release the Hema Committee report.

The Justice Hema Committee was established in 2017 in response to an actress from the Malayalam industry being assaulted. The Hema Committee report was released by the Kerala government on August 19, 2024 and has been creating waves across the film industry based in Kochi. The report brought to light several cases of s*xual assault and abuse against women in the Malayalam film industry. Scroll below to know what the actor says about the report.

Mohanlal: I have not read the Hema Committee report

As reported by ANI, the actor said, “We request you not to put all the focus on AMMA. The investigation is going on. Please don’t destroy the industry.” The ex-Amma president added, “We welcome the Hema Committee report. It was the right decision by the government to release that report. AMMA cannot answer all the questions. These questions should be asked from everyone. This is a very hardworking industry. Many people are involved in it. But everyone cannot be blamed for this. Those responsible will be punished, investigation is going on.”

Stating that all the issues are being looked into and investigated, Mohanlal said, “We will cooperate in the investigation process. We are here only to set things right. Im not aware of any such power group. I am not a part of it. I have not read the Hema Committee report.”

A video from the event has also been shared on Twitter and it sees the senior actor say in Malayalam, “Other industries should also have a Hema Committee report. Let this be a significant moment in the film industry, starting with Malayalam cinema. We need to reconstruct this industry. Actors in this industry are people who get excited and emotional very quickly, and when something like this happens, they are deeply affected by it.”

Hema Committee Report aftermath

Following the release of the Hema Committee report, Mohanlal resigned as President of AMMA. Along with him, all the members of the executive committee submitted their joint resignations. Several actors across film industries in India have commented on the report.
