A number of senior figures in the Malayalam film industry are facing the heat as their names have cropped up in the Justice Hema Committee report that was publically released last week. The report – which includes several shocking stories of abuse, s*xual abuse and r*pe – was submitted to the Kerala government in 2019 but then buried. In the midst of the uproar, actor Mohanlal has resigned as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).
Mohanlal resigns as AMMA President
As reported by NDTV, actor Mohanlal has resigned as President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Actors. AMMA has been under fire ever since the Hema Committee report was shared on Sunday. The report mentioned several s*xual assault and r*pe allegations against some of Mollywood’s biggest names, including veteran actor Siddique and filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan.
Following Mohanlal’s registration, all members of the film body’s executive committee also submitted their resignations. A statement from AMMA said the top decision-making body had taken “moral responsibility” and dissolved itself “in light of allegations made by some actors against some of the committee”.
The AMMA statement further noted that an election to form a new committee will be held within two months.
About the Hema Committee
The Hema Committee was formed in 2017 after Kerala-based Women in Cinema Collective’s (WCC) petition, to study issues of s*xual harassment and gender inequality in the Malayalam film industry. The committee consists of retired High Court Justice K. Hema, former actor Sharada, and retired IAS officer K.B. Valsala Kumari.
Following Justice K Hema Committee’s explosive report highlighting the harassment and abuse of women professionals in the Malayalam film industry, director Ranjith and actor Siddique stepped down from their roles in a state-run film academy and the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), respectively.
