Telugu superstar Nagarjuna is in the news today and for a not-so-good reason. As per media reports, several portions of the actor’s high-profile convention centre were demolished today under the directions of officials of the newly created Hyderabad Disaster Relief and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA). For the unversed, the agency was formed to protect lakes, water bodies and other spaces from encroachment.
While portions of the actor’s conventional centre were demolished, the ‘Brahmastra’ actor took to social media and issued a statement. Read on to know what he said.
Nagarjuna’s N-Convention Centre demolished
As reported by Indian Express, officials had issued a notice to the N-Convention Centre at Madhapur for allegedly encroaching on Tummidikunta Lake’s Full Tank Level (FTL) area. The centre is spread over 10 acres but about 1.12 acres is on land that belongs to the lake. Aside from that, another 2 acres reportedly fell into the lake’s buffer zone. HYDRAA commissioner, IPS officer A V Ranganath said, “They are in clear violation and have encroached upon more than 3 acres of lake land. Today we started demolishing the portions that are encroached.”
Actor reacts
Nagarjuna took to his X (formerly Twitter) account and issued a statement calling HYDRAA’s action unlawful and based on misinformation. He tweeted, “Pained by the unlawful manner of demolition carried out in respect of N Convention, contrary to existing stay orders and Court cases. I thought it fit to issue this statement to place on record certain facts for protecting my reputation and to indicate that we have not done any actions in violation of law. (sic)”
The Telugu actor continued, “The land is a Patta land, and not even an inch of tank plan is encroached. In respect of the building constructed inside the private land, there is a stay order granted against any earlier illegal notice for demolition. Today clearly, the demolition was carried out wrongfully based on misinformation. No notice was issued prior to carrying out the demolition this morning.”
He added, “As a law-abiding citizen, if the Court before which the matter is pending, had decided against me, I would have carried out the demolition myself. I am placing this on record for the purpose of correcting any public misimpression about wrongful constructions or encroachment by us. We would be seeking appropriate relief from the Court in relation to the wrong actions carried out by the authorities.”
The demolition of Nagarjuna’s N-Convention Centre is HYDRAA’s second major operation after the agency was formed last month. Last week, several bungalows, eateries and buildings that fell in the buffer zone of a lake in Shivrampally on the outskirts of Hyderabad were also demolished.
HYDRAA responds
In response to Nagarjuna’s post, HYDRAA stated that the actor’s N-Convention Centre was built in the FTL and buffer zones, and had “no building permission whatsoever”. It also accused the N-Convention Centre of “clearly manipulating the systems and process and continuing their commercial activity through the unauthorised structures built in the FTL and buffer zones.” HYDRAA said in a statement “N – Convention has tried to regularise the unauthorised structures under Building Regularisation Scheme (BRS) but was rejected by the concerned authorities.”
