In a poignant segment from her documentary ‘Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale,’ actress Nayanthara opens up about the harsh comments she faced following the release of her 2005 film Ghajini. The Lady Superstar reflects on the highs and lows of her career in her newly released Netflix docuseries. A clip shared on Instagram by the documentary’s creators features Nayanthara discussing one of the most challenging periods of her professional life.
Nayanthara experienced fat-shaming remarks during Ghajini
While filming the Tamil movie Ghajini, directed by A. R. Murugadoss and co-starring Suriya and Asin, the actress faced brutal fat-shaming remarks that took a deep toll on her. “The lowest point was the film Ghajini,” Nayanthara reveals, as the clip displays news articles labelling her as ‘overweight’. Nayanthara recounts how those unkind remarks stung: “There were days I would read the comments, and people were saying, ‘Why is she even acting? Why is she in the film? She’s so fat.’ It felt unfair.”
While she’s open to criticism about her acting, she emphasizes that fat-shaming is unwarranted. “You can discuss my performance, but you can’t comment on my body. I was doing exactly what my director instructed me and wore what was chosen for me. Being a newcomer, I didn’t have much say in those decisions,” she explained.
Nayanthara also reflected on the controversies surrounding her bikini scene in Vishnuvardhan’s 2007 film Billa. “There was a lot of buzz about that bikini scene, but I didn’t do it to make a statement; I followed my director’s guidance because it was essential to the story. In the end, I believe it worked in my favour,” she expressed.
About Ghajini
For context, Ghajini, which starred Asin, Suriya, and Nayanthara, became a massive box-office hit. It was later remade into a Hindi version in 2008 with Aamir Khan taking the lead role, while Asin and Pradeep Rawat reprised their original characters. Nayanthara’s role was re-cast and played by the late actress Jiah Khan.
