South superstar Nayanthara got married to husband Vignesh Shivan in a beautiful traditional ceremony in the month of June this year. The actress looked like a dream and her wedding pictures seemed something straight out of a fairytale. Post that, the couple started giving out major couple goals through their loved-up pictures from their honeymoon as well as their normal lives. But the biggest surprise came from Nayanthara and Vignesh a few months after their marriage, when the couple took to their social media to announce the birth of their twin sons. On October 9, Vignesh shared the happy news that they have become parents via surrogacy and have names their sons Uyir and Ulagam.

However, their happy news was marred with some controversy as well as people questioned how the couple became parents through surrogacy in just four months of marriage as commercial surrogacy is prohibited in India, with effect from January 25, 2022. Only altruistic surrogacy is permissible under the 2021 Act. In an altruistic surrogacy, the surrogate mother does not receive monetary compensation. Later on, reports had surfaced that Nayanthara and Vignesh actually registered their marriage six years ago, and now their seems to have been a sigh of relief for them in the whole row.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian had earlier said a panel had been appointed to find out if the surrogacy done by the couple was legal and if all rules were followed. The panel headed by two pediatric doctors, submitted their report to the Health Department today and post that, a detailed statement has been released stating that actress Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan got legally married on March 11, 2016. It also stated that they had followed all the due process and guidelines that are given for surrogacy.

The inquiry committee report states that the couple had submitted all necessary documents needed by the inquiry commission and all the guidelines were followed as per ICMR rules. The surrogate mother is a married woman with a child of her own, which is the guideline for being a surrogate. In November 2012, the necessary documents with the surrogate mother were signed. In August 2020, the embryo was formed and preserved at the hospital and it was planted inside the surrogate mother in March 2022 and she delivered twin baby boys through Caesarean.
There were some shortcomings mentioned in the report as well as the investigation team couldn’t reach the family doctor who had referred the couple to the hospital as he had relocated abroad. The investigation team found that according to the ICMR guidelines, the hospital should keep proper records of the treatment given to the couple and the medical condition of the surrogate mother. But the documents regarding this were not properly maintained. Therefore, a notice has been sent as to why the private hospital did not properly follow the guidelines. The notice also seeks explanation from the hospital on why they should not be temporarily closed for not maintaining the documents.
