Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kaduva released recently and it has received mixed reviews. But the film received flak on social media as audiences claimed that the film contains derogatory dialogues about differently-abled children and it resulted in a huge controversy. State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities SH Panchapakesan had issued notices to director Shaji Kailas and producers Supriya Menon and Listin Stephen seeking an explanation for the dialogues used in the film. Later, Kaduva makers issued an apology note on Facebook and removed the derogatory scene.
Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran also offered an apology for hurting people’s sentiments. Sharing Shaji’s apology note on social media, he wrote, “Sorry. It was a mistake. We acknowledge and accept it (sic).”
Shaji in his post wrote in Malayalam that is translated as, “Apologies for the hurtful reference to the parents of differently-abled children in my film ‘Kaduva’. That conversation piece is a sleight of hand. The only request is to forgive the human error.”
He also added that the intention behind it “was to convince him and the audience of the cruelty of the villain’s actions”.

For the unversed, there is a scene in Kaduva, where Prithviraj’s character Kaduvakkunnel Kuruvachan, says that differently-abled children are born with such conditions as a result of their parents’ past sins. It offended Parivaar, an association of parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and they filed a complaint against the makers for the ‘insensitive’ scene.
