Naga Chaitanya-Sobhita Dhulipala’s intimate wedding details
In a candid interview with the New York Times, Naga Chaitanya and Sobhita Dhulipala characterized their wedding as ‘small’ and ‘intimate,’ despite the substantial guest list. The ceremony was steeped in South Indian traditions, with Sobhita describing the ambience as ‘temple-like.’ She expressed, “What’s expected out of an actor is more, in whatever way. I didn’t want to be burdened by that ‘more’.”
Sobhita took on the responsibility of planning the wedding over two months while also filming a movie. This was preceded by a series of traditional Telugu rituals. It included the ‘raata,’ honouring eight Hindu deities with prayers, and the ‘mangala snanam,’ where turmeric paste is applied to the bride in a cleansing ritual. The following day, they held a ceremony called ‘pelli kuthuru,’ meaning daughter of the marriage. It is where family elders bestowed blessings upon the bride, followed by Chaitanya’s ‘pelli koduku,’ or son of the marriage.
In the evening, Sobhita organized a ‘young people’s party’ for 40 close friends. During this her father made a surprise appearance, prompting her to politely ask him to leave. The wedding ceremony commenced on December 4 at 5 PM, with families exchanging gifts such as fruits and clothing. The event spanned several hours with the most significant rituals conducted shortly after 8 PM. It is based on calculations derived from their birth charts.
Sobhita dazzled in a silk saree woven with real gold and later changed into a nearby village’s white cotton saree. Local musicians provided entertainment throughout the day, as Sobhita preferred to avoid mainstream performers, stating her dislike for ‘homogeneity.’ Guests enjoyed a culinary feast from five regions, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, along with Japanese dishes from Shoyu, a restaurant owned by Chaitanya.
