In a recent interview, actor Suriya shared that he never imagined himself in the film industry, and his decision to act was largely motivated by a loan taken out by his mother. Despite being the son of actor Sivakumar, Suriya revealed that he had aspirations of starting his own business rather than pursuing an acting career, a path he ultimately chose to help repay his mother’s ₹25,000 loan.
Suriya reveals why he joined the film industry
Suriya recounted his early days working in the garment industry in an interview with Pinkvilla. He earned ₹750 for fifteen days of labour. After three years, he was making ₹8,000 a month, with hopes of launching his own company one day, backed by his father’s promise to invest ₹1 crore. At that time, acting was far from his plans.
However, his mother, Lakshmi, disclosed that she had taken a ₹25,000 loan without his father’s knowledge. “Mom explained that our bank balance had never exceeded one lakh or one and a half lakh, and Dad would wait for his salary, which didn’t always come regularly,” Suriya said, referring to their financial struggles as his father had not worked consistently for several months.
Suriya mentioned that although he was familiar with offers in the film industry because of his background. It was only when Mani Ratnam’s production team persistently approached him that he agreed to take on a role. “I never thought I’d be in the film industry; I never wanted to face the camera or dreamt of being an actor. I entered this field solely to repay my mom’s loan and assure her that she wouldn’t have to worry anymore. That’s how my journey began,” he reflected.
Suriya’s debut film, Nerrukku Ner, hit theatres in 1997 and was produced by Mani Ratnam. It was a story written and directed by Vasanth. The film featured Vijay in the lead role, alongside Kausalya and Simran as female leads. The actor is set to showcase his talent once again in a dual role in Siva’s upcoming film, Kanguva. It is scheduled for release in theatres on November 14, co-starring Bobby Deol and Disha Patani.
