Ratan Tata was the Chairman of the Tata Sons Group. He passed away today, Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Ratan was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and Padma Vibhushan in 2008, the third and second highest civilian honours awarded by the Government of India, respectively.
Tata was hospitalised at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Monday, October 7. As per reports, he underwent routine medical investigations due to his age and related medical conditions.

A while ago, Harsh Goenka took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle and announced the sad news. He wrote, “The clock has stopped ticking. The Titan passes away. #RatanTata was a beacon of integrity, ethical leadership and philanthropy, who has imprinted an indelible mark on the world of business and beyond. He will forever soar high in our memories. R.I.P”

The 86-year-old industrialist had earlier this week assured the public that his hospital stay was part of a routine medical checkup tied to his age and related health conditions. The statement released on his Instagram handle read, “I am aware of recent rumours circulating regarding my health and want to assure everyone that these claims are unfounded. I am currently undergoing medical check-ups due to my age and related medical conditions.”
Ratan Tata’s post further reads, “There is no cause for concern. I remain in good spirits and request that the public and media respect and refrain from spreading misinformation.”
About Ratan Tata
Ratan Tata joined the Tata group in 1961, where he worked on the shop floor of Tata Steel. He later succeeded J. R. D. Tata as chairman of Tata Sons upon the latter’s retirement in 1991. Under his tenure, the Tata Group acquired brands such as Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus among others. The industrialist invested in companies like Snapdeal, Teabox, CashKaro, and Ola Cabs. Tata is also one of the largest and notable philanthropists, having donated around 60–65% of his income to charity.
Ratan was also a prolific investor and has made numerous investments in several startups. Tata has invested in over 30 start-ups to date, most in a personal capacity and some via his investment company. Tata has never married and has no children. In 2011, Tata stated, “I came close to getting married four times and each time I backed off in fear or for one reason or another.”
