Anushree Mehta MeToo movement

Producer turned director Anushree Mehta is today at the apex of the pyramid but in the early days of her career, she had faced a couple of weird situations in the industry. She had been assertive and defensive since her childhood and has a certain way to deal with such kind of people.

She said, “I’m very assertive in the way I am. I am also very defensive. It happened with me a couple of times when I was much younger when I just entered the industry. I was 23. A very very known director tried to kind of make a couple of sneaky remarks. But I came with strong words and he backed off. As a personality, I’m extremely strong. It’s unfortunate that I have to shield myself. Every industry has that level of misogyny where women are treated as objects. We fight it every day and it is in our subconscious mind. Our system has been going weird and I have been defensive since childhood that nobody can break the wall and even approach me to have that kind of conversation.”

When asked about the #MeToo movement that has sparked yet again, she said, “Where there is a revolution going on, there will always be people who will try to take advantage of the situation. It would be wrong to say women are taking undue advantage, they are not. I mean maximum people I know I can vow they have gone through but not necessary everyone will speak the truth. It happens in the industry but for specific cases, there needs to be an investigation. Some women are taking advantage but most women are not. We won’t encourage anyone to lie about it and we will stand by whoever is going through it. Tomorrow it can happen to us.”

She added, “There is misogyny in every industry. The way MeToo movement was treated back in the day and now again the whole conversation has started, I really don’t know what to say but the movement shouldn’t die down.”

On the work front, Anushree Mehta made her debut as a director with the short film ‘Unkahee’ that is currently streaming on Eros Now.
