Rochelle Rao returns to The Kapil Sharma Show (TKSS) after a hiatus. She will be seen returning in his sexy avatar as Lottery and she is definitely very excited about it. In a candid and exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Rochelle Rao opens up on her equation with The Kapil Sharma Show team, bond with them, lockdown and lull at work, missing the stage, meeting Kapil’s daughter and why she hasn’t gotten a chance to meet his newborn son. Excerpts from the conversation below:
You returned to the TKSS sets after a while. How was the first day?
It was really great. I felt so much of energy, especially after the lull we have all faced in the last two years, everyone was rearing to go, the energy was definitely high. It felt like coming back to the family.
Things have definitely changed post pandemic, what did you find different on sets on your return?
Many things are different. The audience that we have are less in number. Everyone is masked up, it is hard to tell who is who. We take our masks off while on stage but it does feel different but I think everyone is working hard to look past all of that and do our best and keep entertaining.
Comedy is considered a difficult genre always. Do you get nervous before getting to the gig?
I think for me, every time I do comedy there is a little sense of nervousness because I work with the best people in the industry. They are the stalwarts of comedy in the industry, you know. They are amazing and that keeps me on my toes as I have to match up to their skills. At the same time, it is a good challenge to push yourself to the next level. In fact, during the lockdown I did an acting course as well so I was more excited.
TKSS promos promised that the show is a revamped version. Does the process of constantly evolving within the same genre get challenging?
It is definitely difficult to bring about the show, especially a number one show, regardless of whether it is fiction or comedy. The writers are brilliant, the fact that they bring about new content every week is amazing. Little pressure is there for everyone but that pressure is what helps us get the best work out. The worst thing for actor is to be complacent when they go on stage or sets because then you are not pushing yourself to your maximum.
Was lockdown difficult for you? Was there any point where it probably got to you?
Yes it did. For me, it was a big time for learning. I learned acting online, I did my Hindi classes, learnt to cook, so we tried to learn a lot during that time. I read a lot of book, and we spent a lot of quality time with each other, Keith and I. There were moments where we got frustrated but that was for everybody.

Kapil is usually seen pulling your leg and the camaraderie shared with other members is also very warm. Has anything changed there?
That is always the same. In spite of all of them being all senior, they make sure that we have fun on sets. We do hang out outside of work too so there is a camaraderie that we share and we work hard to give the best content out.
Kapil was also on a small break after the birth of his newborn son. Did you happen to meet him by any chance?
I have met his daughter but not met his son yet. Keith and I also make sure to avoid going to houses because we are out for shoot, and exposed, so just as a precautionary measure, we avoid.
