FIR filed against Bharti Singh for hurting religious sentiments of the Sikh community

Comedienne Bharti Singh is currently in hot waters after cracking a joke on men with beards. Reportedly, an FIR has been lodged against her for hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community. The FIR was filed at Adampur police station in Jalandhar, accusing her of mocking the Sikh people examples of their moustaches and beards in an old video. According to a report in TOI, she has been charged under Section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage reli­gious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code.

For the unversed, in an old video, Bharti was seen saying mocking the men with beards and said that when you drink milk and put beard in your mouth, it tastes like sewaiyan. She also talks about men having lice in their beards. The video which also features Jasmin Bhasin went viral on social media. However, the Sikh community was not very impressed with the joke and reportedly, they have filed a complaint against the comedian for disrespecting beards and moustaches.

Only yesterday, Bharti shared a video on her Instagram where she is seen apologising to the community and mentioning that she respects the community as she herself is a Punjabi. Sharing the video, Bharti’s apologised note read, “Main comedy karti hoon logo ko khush karne ke liye na ki kisi ka dil dukhane ke liye. Agar meri kisi baat se koi hurt hua ho tho maaf kar dena aapni behan samjh ke #punjabi #proudpunjabi #love #respect”

In the video, The Kapil Sharma Show star Bharti Singh said, “A video of mine is getting viral for the last few days. I’ve been sent that video and people have messaged me about that. I was told that I’ve made fun of beards and moustaches. I have not made fun of the Sikhs’ religious beliefs in the viral video. Nowhere have I said anything about any caste or religion. You can watch the video. I’ve not said that Punjabi people keep beards and we have a problem with that. I was having a genuine conversation and doing comedy with my friend.”
