There has been recently a heated debate on the Maharashtra Shakti Bill. Many actors have even reacted to it and shared their opinion on the bill. ‘Maddam Sir’ actress Gulki Joshi has a way too different opinion on the bill.
Sharing her opinion on the bill, Gulki told us, “I know the whole motto of the bill is to curb the crimes against women and children, by having provisions(in the bill) for stern punishment including the death penalty, life sentence, and hefty fines against perpetrators.”
She added, “I don’t say that the bill is totally wrong but some points are missed. The points here not highlighted in the bill is the mention of consent or the meaning of it. For example- in many cases an accused can easily take the plea of consent with such an explanation in the court, making it impossible for the prosecution to establish rape. On a secondary note, the punishment like the death penalty poses a threat to the lives of the victim.”

“The bill has some provisions that the whole nation wants but practically it’s still not applicable as every coin has two sides. I am also happy with the time being lessened for the action to be taken in terms of trial and investigation. Also with the penalty for social media defamation and harassment. Even who doesn’t want to see the accused receiving the death penalty for such a heinous crime? But in the end, you can’t ignore the other side of the bill”, Gulki concluded.
For the unversed, the ‘Shakti bill’ by the Uddhav Thackeray-led government is to curb sexual offences against women and children.
