Praveen Kumar Sobti who played the famous character of ‘Bheem’ in B.R. Chopra’s television series Mahabharat started in 1988 has passed away at the age of 74 on Monday after suffering a heart attack.

Confirming the same, news agency ANI tweeted: “Praveen Kumar Sobti, popular for playing the role of Bheem in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat, passed away today in Delhi. He will be cremated at the crematorium ground in Punjabi Bagh today.”

Kumar’s daughter Nikunika told Indian Express: “He passed away yesterday around 9.30 pm. He suffered a heart attack. He died at home in Delhi.” 

Pravin Kumar Sobti has also starred in many films including Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Shehenshah and Dharmendra’s Loha. His other films include- Aaj Ka Arjun, Yudh, Mohabbat Ke Dushman, Karishma Kudrat Kaa, Ajooba and Ghayal, among others. He reprised his character of Bheem once again in the 2013 film Mahabharat Aur Barbareek.

The late actor also made the country proud by winning medals at the Asian and Commonwealth Games and had even participated in the Olympics. He won four medals at the Asian Games, including two gold medals, won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games and competed in two Olympics.  He worked as the Deputy Commandant in the Border Security Force (BSF) as well.

Later, Pravin left acting and entered politics. He contested the Delhi Assembly elections on Aam Aadmi Party ticket in 2013. Later he left AAP and joined. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

He is survived by wife, daughter, two younger brothers and a sister.
