MasterChef India judge, Chef Kunal Kapur can breathe a sigh of relief. The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted divorce to the celebrity chef on the grounds of cruelty meted out to him by his estranged wife. The court passed the judgement saying the woman’s conduct towards him was devoid of dignity and empathy. Kunal had previously appealed for divorce in a family court, which did not pass the judgment in his favour. He then challenged the court’s decision in the Delhi HC.
In his plea, Kunal mentioned that his wife has been humiliating him in public and regularly disrespecting his parents. The judgment was passed after the hearing of both parties and awarded on the grounds of cruelty and humiliation. Scroll down to know the details.
Delhi HC’s judgement
As reported by Hindustan Times, Kunal Kapur was granted the divorce on the grounds of cruelty and humiliation by the spouse. The bench, in their judgment, said, “We find that the conduct of the respondent (wife) towards the appellant (husband) has been such that it is devoid of dignity and empathy towards him. When such is the nature of one spouse towards the other, it brings disgrace to the very essence of marriage, and there exists no possible reason as to why he should be compelled to live while enduring the agony of living together.”
The judgment further read, “The respondent (wife), in her written submission, has made allegations of infidelity and extra-marital relations of the appellant (Kapur) after his coming to the limelight. She has averred that once the appellant started getting public attention, he regularly engaged in flirtatious texts with his fans in addition to making unnatural sexual demands from her.” The MasterChef judge’s wife’s allegations included infidelity claims and instigating her to commit suicide. Her side alleged, “In collusion with his parents, he (Kunal) has enacted sordid drama to get rid of daughter-in-law by either forcing her to commit suicide or by taking divorce.”
The court maintained that no proof was submitted by Kunal Kapur’s wife to support her claims, which meant she was insinuating. Favouring Kapur, the court said, “It is relevant to mention here that within two years of marriage, the appellant has established himself as a celebrity chef, which is a reflection of his hard work and determination. Considering the aforesaid facts, it is only prudent to observe that these are mere allegations made by the respondent to disrepute the appellant in the eyes of the court and such unsubstantiated claims have the effect on one’s reputation and therefore, amount to cruelty.”
