Munawar Faruqui has courted controversy yet again. The ‘LockUpp’ and ‘Bigg Boss 17’ winner recently received severe backlash on social media for cracking an alleged inappropriate joke about the Konkani people. Not just netizens, the stand-up comedian also received a threatening warning from BJP MLA Nitesh Rane and some supporters of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for the joke.
For the unversed, during a recent show, while interacting with the audience, Faruqui said, “Konkani log c banate hai (Konkanis fool others).” As this statement has hurt the sentiments of some people, the reality show winner took to social media to issue an apology. Alongside the apology, Munawar Faruqui also clarified that he did not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings with his words.
Munawar Faruqui apologises for crass Konkani joke
Late last night, Munawar took to his X (formerly Twitter) account and uploaded an apology video for hurting people’s sentiments. He accompanied the video with a Marathi caption reading, “Much love and my apologies to Konkanis.” Scroll below to check out his apology video.
Apologising for hurting the sentiments of the people, Munawar is heard saying in Hindi, “Recently a show took place and when I was interacting with the audience, I made a statement about people hailing from the Konkani area of Maharashtra. However, the joke/statement is being taken out of context with people feeling I spoke ill of Konkani people. I made fun of Konkan. That was never my intention. It was an improv, crowd work.”
He added, “I have noticed that some people are getting hurt over my clip. As a stand-up comedian, I don’t want to hurt anyone. I apologise to all as it was never my intention to hurt anyone with my work.” He further stated, “Maine jispe joke kiya tha wo logon ne bhi bahut enjoy kiya tha show. (The people I made the joke about also enjoyed the show a lot.) The audience consisted of Marathi, Muslim and Hindu people. But when we see such things on the internet, and we notice it, we understand the issue. I want to apologise and say sorry to all. Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra.”

Reacting to his X video, one netizen wrote, “Darr gaya Munawar.” Another wrote, “Not needed but it’s good you spoke about it. Appreciated.” A third added, “Always with You bhai No Matter What…We all know you will never hurt someone”
