Nilanjana Purkayasstha’s new family show Chikoo Ki Mummy Durr Kei wins viewers’ hearts

Chikoo Ki Mummy Durr Kei, which premiered on Star Plus on September 6, cuts through the clutter of the saas-bahu dramas and comes as a breath of fresh air with its unique plot. Now in its fourth week, the show has audiences on the edge as a distraught young mother pines for her missing child, Chikoo.

Viewers are spared the inane and endless familial spats that are the trademark of most shows. Instead, the screenplay cleverly intersperses high drama with beautiful dance sequences, a format that made Nilanjana’s earlier show Kulfi Kumar Bajewala, which focused on music, a huge success. What connects the estranged mother and daughter is their inborn talent and immense love for dance, a bond that pulls at them like an invisible magnet, making the show a treat to watch.

Paridhi Sharma and the incredibly talented Vaishnavi Prajapati are the powerful lead protagonists of this woman-centric dance drama. Through them, Nilanjana redefines norms and breaks through boundaries, modifying viewers’ ideas of a woman’s proactive role in today’s society. Chikoo Ki Mummy Durr Kei also aims to be inclusive and secular, with topical festivals being celebrated in the show.

The show is produced and executed by Nilanjana Purkayasstha and Herumb Khot, both well established names in the world of television. Their brand of storytelling explores the complexities of human emotions and the many shades and layers in which a set of characters and circumstances can evolve. This comes through in their extensive body of work over the years, which includes Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani, Kullfi Kumarr Bajewala, Dil Toh Happy Hai Ji and the hugely popular Peshwa Bajirao.
