MTV Roadies has been quite a popular reality show since the early 2000s, and one of the main reasons for it was its judges Raghu Ram and Rajiv Ram, and its presenter Rannvijay Singha. While the show still enjoys some fan following, neither of the three personalities is part of the show. While the Ram brothers left the show in 2014, Singha parted ways with the reality show in 2012 and then again in 2020.
During a recent interaction, Raghu got candid about why he quit Roadies and whether he will ever return to the MTV show.
Raghu Ram on leaving Roadies
During a recent interaction with India Today, Raghu revealed he parted ways with the MTV show in 2014 as it affected his personal life, and even led to his marriage falling apart. He stated, “I was done. I was fed up. I walked away at the peak of it for two reasons. One was because MTV wanted to make the show a certain way, which I did not agree with. Till 10 seasons, I had pretty much a free hand. But in the 9th-10th seasons, I found myself coming into conflict with MTV, because they wanted a certain populist kind of angle to it.”
Talking about the toll it has on his personal life, Raghu Ram said, “The second thing that was happening was, personally, my life was going through a lot of upheavals because of Roadies and because of the surrounding craze. My marriage was suffering. Ultimately, I got divorced. My mental health, my physical health, and everything else was just crazy. I needed to take a step away. So, I stopped, and I’m glad I did. Not one day have I regretted walking away.”
For those who do not know, Raghu Ram was married to actor Sugandha Garg. The duo – who tied the knot in 2006, separated in 2016. Their divorce was finalised in 2018. The same year, he married singer Natalie Di Luccio, and on January 8, 2020, they welcomed a son and named him Rhythm.
On returning to the show
During the same interview, Raghu Ram revealed that the channel approached him and his brother, Rajiv to return to Roadies. Stating that he is not interested in that, Raghu said, “No, not going to happen. We were asked, but no, I don’t want to. I haven’t seen Roadies ever since I left. It is not ‘that’ Roadies now. It is a completely different show with the name Roadies on it. The format can be compared more to the voice than to the previous Roadies. When Rajiv and I walked away that day, that show was over. That particular format was over.”
After brothers Raghu and Rajiv parted ways with Roadies, Rannvijay Singha carried the show ahead. However, two years ago, he too walked out from it. The last season of Roadies was judged by Prince Narula, Rhea Chakraborty, and Gautam Gulati. Sonu Sood posed as the super judge.
