Actor Pratik Gandhi gained a lot of praise for his portrayal of stockbroker Harshad Mehta in Hansal Mehta’s web series Scam 1992. He is still basking in success as he has been awarded multiples honours for his role.
Very few of you might know that Pratik was a theatre artist. Though he appeared in Loveyatri he was not known to many people till Scam 1992 released last year. Opening up about his struggles with the Humans of Bombay, Pratik said that after completing his graduation in engineering, he moved to Mumbai and for 4 years he worked on a project basis so that he could act. But there were months when he had no income. So, he did jobs like installing TV towers and anchoring.
“But then the 2006 Surat floods took our home. My family came to Bombay and the 4 of us stayed in a 1RK; after I got married, 5 of us were in that tiny space. So I took up a full-time job. Still, I’d rehearse for 2 hours before work & after, I’d do plays. I did this for 6 years,” said Pratik.
He then got a role in a Gujarati film and he took a 22-day leave from work for the shoot. The movie was titled Bey Yaar and it made him an overnight Gujarati actor. At 36, he quit his job to become a full-time actor as he felt it right.
Hansal Mehta gave him the big break of his life with Scam 1992. He said, “It was so overwhelming. And when Shabana Azmi Ma’am told me it was the best performance she’d seen in 20 years, I was in tears. My wife was ecstatic! And when my parents saw me win an IIFA, they were so moved.”
He concluded by saying the famous dialogue from Scam 1992, “I decided to take a risk kyun ki… risk hai toh ishq hai!”
