Fresh trouble for Tandav makers; FIR registered in UP for ‘hurting Hindu sentiment’

Tandav premiered on Amazon Prime Video on January 15. Since its release, Ali Abbas Zafar’s political drama has received lots of criticism specially from politicians. On Sunday, Maharashtra BJP MLA Ram Kadam filed a complaint against the makers, actors and director of Tandav for allegedly insulting the Hindu deities and demanded the removal of the scenes where he felt that it mocked Lord Shiva. The MLA even demanded an apology from Tandav actor Zeeshan Ayub who played Shiva Shekhar in the series. As per a report in NDTV, now, an FIR has been lodged against Ali Abbas Zafar, the producer and writer Gaurav Solanki at Lucknow’s Hazratganj police station on Sunday night. The FIR was filed hours after the centre’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting reportedly sought a response from Amazon Prime based on Maharashtra BJP MLA’s complaint.

As soon as the case was registered, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s media adviser Shalabh Mani Tripathi shared the copy of the FIR on his Twitter handle.

He wrote in Hindi that there is no tolerance for playing with people’s sentiments in Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh. “A serious case has been registered against the entire team of Tandav, which is spreading hate in the guise of cheap web series. Prepare for arrest,” he tweeted.

The complaint states that 17 minutes into the first episode, “people dressed up in a very bad manner to represent Hindu gods and goddesses and have been shown to speak in a very uncalled for language… that hurts religious sentiments”. Also, in the same episode, there are “conversations that lead to caste conflict”, and the character of India’s Prime Minister has been shown in a very indecent manner and there are scenes that insult women, as per the complaint.

Tandav stars Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Kumud Mishra, Kritika Kamra, Sarah Jane Dias, Gauahar Khan, Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub and others.
